What are the qualifications for a United States marshall?

• You must be able to prove you are a U.S. citizen.

• You must go through pre-employment medical suitability and meet certain medical requirements for being a U.S. marshall.

• You must commit to having ongoing medical examinations and evaluations to make sure you continue to meet the medical requirements.

• You need to complete and pass a pre-employment physical fitness test.

• You must commit to physical fitness tests on a bi-annual basis throughout your career.

• You need to pass a pre-employment drug screening test. You must also commit to participation in randomized drug tests throughout your career.

• You must pass an initial Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) and commit to further investigations throughout your career.

• You must be eligible to obtain a Top Secret clearance.

• Must qualify for the use of multiple firearms and the carrying of a handgun.

• You must have a valid driver's license at the time of your appointment.

• You need to sign a mobility agreement and a memorandum of understanding. U.S. Marshals are placed in a duty location that meets the needs of the agency, and you are required to remain at this post for at least three years.

• Must be willing to provide sworn statements and testimony in court proceedings.

• You must complete an initial online application, questionnaire, and additional assessments. These can come in the form of examinations.

In addition to these strict requirements, most U.S. marshals have a bachelor's degree or higher in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, or other related areas.

Many have prior law enforcement experience, such as with a police department or sheriff's office. Some also have military experience.
