The qualifications for a bookkeeper is a high school diploma although an associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is helpful. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, if you intend to pursue a career as a bookkeeper, you are required to hold at least a high school diploma.

Many employers, however, may prefer that you complete some postsecondary coursework or hold an associate degree in business, accounting, or a similar field. Although it isn't required, some bookkeepers also take bookkeeping classes, pursue certifications, or earn bachelor's degrees to increase their chances of employment.
