A trade school, or a specific Car Mechanic School, will also give you that necessary training. If you have previous military training in mechanics, this can be a great starting point. You won't have a degree, but you will have the skills necessary to work as a mechanic.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has an entry-level test for automotive technicians to demonstrate their previously acquired skill sets.
