What are the qualifications of a mechanic?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

The qualifications of a mechanic are to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent education and to complete some secondary education or training. For education, you can either get an associate's degree in automotive technology or a bachelor's degree in auto service management.

A trade school, or a specific Car Mechanic School, will also give you that necessary training. If you have previous military training in mechanics, this can be a great starting point. You won't have a degree, but you will have the skills necessary to work as a mechanic.

There is also certification for mechanics. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) has an entry-level test for automotive technicians to demonstrate their previously acquired skill sets. After you find a position and gain experience, you can complete ASE certification to become a certified professional technician.
