By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

The qualifications of a Supreme Court Justice, as specified by the Constitution, does not give requirements concerning age, education, profession, or native-born citizenship, but does have to be trained in the law.

However, most modern Supreme Court Justices have attended law school and held high office in the legal realm. They generally start out as lawyers or prosecutors and eventually become state or federal judges before being nominated to be a Supreme Court Justice.

Most Justices also begin their tenure in the position at ages in the 40s to 50s range. Many have also been personal acquaintances of sitting Presidents, as this is one a judge can seek to gain the great honor of a nomination.

Many Supreme Court Justices also attended some of the top law schools in the country, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Northwestern, and others.

The court's head Justice, the Chief Justice, also does not have any specific requirements and does not even have to have been an Associate Supreme Court Justice first.

The last Supreme Court Justice who did not attend law school was James F. Byrnes (1941 - 1942). Byrnes also did not graduate from high school. He was self-taught in the study of law and passed the bar exam at the age of 23.
