What are the qualifications of a tattoo artist?
To become a tattoo artist, you need to be an artistic individual who has completed an apprenticeship that leads to certification or licensure. There is not a set educational requirement for tattoo artists, but most of them require you to hold a high school diploma or the equivalent. A background in art is extremely beneficial to be a successful tattoo artist.
The requirements to be a tattoo artist will vary not only from state to state but in some instances, from county to county. This means it is extremely important to know what is required for your specific area. In general, tattoo artists will undergo extensive on-the-job training through apprenticeships that will last on average from one to three years.
During an apprenticeship, you will learn sanitation and disposal procedures as well as infection prevention before you even begin tattooing. Employees in a tattoo parlor must complete OSHA-approved bloodborne pathogens (BBP) training. Apprentices will also have direct observation hours, as well as hours cleaning and preparing a workstation.
Apprenticeship length generally depends on when an artist is ready and holds enough skill and knowledge to begin working without being under the observation of someone else. Often, new tattoo artists will still be aided by more experienced tattoo artists. Throughout their careers, tattoo artists will often need to complete continuing education.
