What are the three types of claims adjusters?

By Zippia Team - Mar. 3, 2022

The three types of claims adjusters are staff adjusters, public adjusters, and independent adjusters.

Staff adjusters or company adjusters work for insurance companies. These individuals are full-time employees representing the company that issued the client policy. The benefits of being a staff adjuster are regular hours and a scheduled salary.

Public adjusters are hired by the claimant. They often work as independent operators and represent their clients in cases with insurance companies. Hiring a public adjuster is similar to someone hiring an attorney to represent them in court.

Independent adjusters are similar to staff adjusters in that they represent the insurance company in claims brought by policyholders. The difference between these two types of adjusters is that independent adjusters are not full-time employees of insurance companies.

These adjusters are independent contractors and receive 1099 at the end of the year rather than a W-2.
