What are the types of shift work?

Many different types of shift work exist in different industries and fields. Shift work refers to jobs that function on a schedule of rotating workers or professionals.

These work schedules might change weekly, monthly, or quarterly, depending on the industry and specific role. Here are some common shifts for shift work roles:

  • First shift - 8 AM to 4 PM (or sometimes 9 AM to 5 PM)

  • Police Officer

  • Paramedic

    A paramedic works autonomously in a wide variety of healthcare settings. Depending on their qualifications, paramedics can work in these environments: roadways, people's homes, wilderness environments, aircraft, and with SWAT teams during police operations.

    Their primary function is to stabilize patients with life-threatening injuries and transport them to a hospital. EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) is a similar position that also works a wide variety of shifts, including a night or graveyard shift.

  • Nurse

    A nurse works in the hospital setting or at an ill patient's home. They have several different duties in these environments. They care for a patient's physical needs by observing and monitoring the patient and recording relevant data that helps aid in the treatment decision-making process.

  • ER Nurse

    An ER nurse is a specific type of nurse that can have shifts at any time over 24 hours. An ER nurse treats stable patients without life-threatening or serious injuries or illnesses admitted into the emergency room. The patients they treat are generally coherent and able to talk.

  • Customer service representative

    A customer service representative fields customer calls with questions or concerns regarding a company's products or services.

    They often have pre-written scripts to follow in frequent customer service scenarios. These workers might work many different shifts depending on what company they work for.
