What degree do you need to be a criminal profiler?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

To be a criminal profiler, you need at least a bachelor's degree in forensics, psychology, criminal justice, or a related field. These will give you the foundational knowledge needed to be a successful profiler. Many criminal profilers will also attend a law enforcement academy, but this is not required.

Successful criminal profilers will have extensive backgrounds in investigations. This can be gained through experience in law enforcement or the military. Some criminal profilers will even go through the FBI academy to gain knowledge and experience. A master's degree can also be beneficial and will make you a more competitive candidate.

Experience working in the field is also highly necessary. Many criminal profilers will work as investigators for up to fifteen years before becoming profilers. Once you begin working as a criminal profiler, it is also important to engage with continued education, training, and certifications.
