What degree do you need to be a forensic entomologist?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Apr. 2, 2023

You need a doctorate in entomology to be a forensic entomologist. Forensic entomologists are Board-certified forensic scientists who hold a Ph.D. in entomology. Along with a doctorate, forensic entomologists need to complete specific coursework in the forensic application of entomology.

Before earning a Ph.D. in entomology, aspiring forensic entomologists must complete a bachelor's and master's degree in entomology or a related field. These programs help prepare forensic entomologists for the education and challenges presented during the doctorate program.

Once aspiring forensic entomologists have graduated with their doctorates, they must be certified through the American Board of Forensic Entomology. After they receive certification, they do need to renew every five years.
