By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need a master's degree in history to be a history professor. At a minimum, this is what you will need to be a history professor. However, most colleges require a doctorate for full-time professors.

During the undergraduate programs, you are expected to study the world, American, European, and social history. Once you have accomplished this and move on to graduate school, you will then choose a specialization.

There are several areas that can be selected for specialization, which include medieval, twentieth-century, military, and more. Completing a Ph.D. requires original research as well as a dissertation.

If you choose to pursue a career as a history professor, it is essential to complete your degree. Some smaller two-year schools require at least a master's degree. Some four-year schools will allow a master's degree, but most require a doctorate as well as language expertise. The education gives you the required knowledge to be a history professor.
