What degree do you need to be a lobbyist?
While a degree is technically not a requirement, most lobbyists have a bachelor's degree. There are no licensing or certification requirements, but lobbyists are required to register with their state and the federal government. A major in one of the following areas is the most commonly seen:
Political science
Journalism
Law
Communications
Public relations
Economics
If you are still earning your degree, it is recommended that you check out various government-related internships as a congressional aide in a government agency or with a lobbying firm. These positions will give you a look at how lobbying works in the political system.
It may also be useful start out in a law or public relations firm. Many lobbyists also come from careers as legislators or former politicians. As with many other industries, networking is of the utmost importance. In lobbying, people are hired as much for who they know as for what they know.
