This question is about nurse manager education.

What degree do you need to be a nurse manager?

By Roger Raber - Feb. 20, 2023

The minimum degree required to be a nurse manager is a BSN. Many employers require additional education and experience from those considered for a nurse manager position.

Because nurse managers or administrators are responsible for overseeing a nursing staff and resolving patient care issues and conflicts, they must have the requisite training and experience to deal with these responsibilities.

The American Organization of Nurse Executives provides two certification paths for those pursuing a nurse manager position. CENP certification requires an MSN and two years of nurse manager experience or a BSN and four years managerial experience.

CNML certification allows individuals to have a bachelor's or master's degree and varying levels of nurse manager experience. The CNML is the only nurse manager certification that accepts someone with a non-nursing background for certification.
