What degree do you need to be a psychiatric nurse?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You need a bachelor's degree in the science of nursing to be a psychiatric nurse. After you get your bachelor's degree, you must then pass the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) to become a registered nurse in the state in which you wish to practice.

If you want an advanced role in psychiatric nursing, you have to attend more school. Advanced positions in this field require either a master's degree in the science of nursing (MSN) or a doctoral degree. These degrees allow you to become a psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist (CNS) or a psychiatric nurse practitioner (PNP).
