What degree do you need to be a radiation therapist?
You need at least an associate's degree to be a radiation therapist. While you can become a radiation therapist with an associate's degree, most employers prefer their therapists to have a bachelor's degree in order to be considered for a position.
Radiation therapist education requirements vary by state and employer; however, it is important that your radiation therapy program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experiences to prepare you for a career as a radiation therapist. After you complete your education, you will have to be registered.
You will be eligible to sit for the registry exam offered by the American Registry Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) upon completion of either an associate's or bachelor's degree program. The exam focuses on the four most heavily represented content areas:
Patient care
Safety
Image production
Procedures
In some states, you will also have to obtain a state license before you can begin working as a radiation therapist.
