What degree do you need to be a sex therapist?
To become a sex therapist, you need to have a doctoral degree in psychology, counseling, or social work from an accredited university.
Alternatively, you may have a medical degree with additional training in human sexuality. Many sex therapists also have certification from the American Board of Sexology.
A sex therapist must have at least 150 hours of specialized sex therapy training, which includes:
A study of the history of sexology
Medical issues that impact sexuality
Consultation approaches
Interpersonal relationship aspects
These courses will give the student the knowledge necessary to assess, counsel, treat, and advise patients with sexual problems.
You should only receive an education that comes from either an accredited university or has been approved by the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists.
An applicant for a master's degree in a related field with 200 hours of supervised therapy with clients dealing with sexual concerns may apply for internships or other programs that will allow him or her to obtain such experience.
He or she will also need to complete at least 50 hours of supervision. These two items are necessary for certification, which is the final stage of becoming a sex therapist.
