What degree do you need to be a sign language interpreter?
You do not need a degree to be a sign language interpreter. Education for sign language interpreters ranges from a high school diploma to a bachelor's degree.
Many people learn American sign language through experience within the deaf community or through online classes or private tutoring. Many colleges do offer interpreter programs, as some employers prefer candidates holding a certificate or degree in ASL.
The Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education provides a list of accredited colleges offering programs.
Regardless of how you learn ASL, earning certification opens up the highest levels of career potential within the discipline. The Registry for the Interpreters of the Deaf issues NIC certifications at three levels.
Certification requires a bachelor's degree and completion of the NIC performance and knowledge exams. Candidates will then be certified as either a national interpreter, an advanced interpreter, or a master interpreter.
