What degree do you need to be a speech pathologist?
You need a Master of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology to become a speech pathologist. You must also pass the Praxis Examination in Speech-Language Pathology and complete a clinical fellowship. The last step in the process is to obtain licensure and certification.
Once you have completed your undergraduate degree, the next step is to enroll in a graduate program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology. While the exact curriculum will vary, it typically consists of 60 credit hours of material and both academic and clinical work.
To earn licensure in most states, you must pass the Praxis 2 Examination in Speech-Language Pathology administered by the Educational Testing Service. To pass, you must earn a minimum score of 162. The test will include material about the foundations of speech-language pathology, screening and assessments, and etiology.
After completing your degree, you will have to complete a post-graduate clinical fellowship before you can apply for your state licensure. Typical requirements include:
Overseen and monitored by an ASHA-certified SLP for the duration of the fellowship
Be at least 1,260 hours in length (typically accrued over 36 weeks)
Have at least 80% of your clinical experience involving direct clinical contact with patients
Upon completing the fellowship, you should be eligible for state licensure.
