What degree do you need to be a structural engineer?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You need a civil engineering degree to be a structural engineer. A bachelor's degree in architectural engineering is also acceptable. However, most structural engineering positions require you to obtain a master's degree in one of these engineering fields as well.

During your education, you should take courses that emphasize structural engineering. You might also consider obtaining an honors degree with a more specific focus on structural engineering.

You should also seek to get accepted into a structural engineering-related internship while in school or immediately after. This can be of great benefit to your career in the field and could possibly even result in a full-time position.
