What degree do you need to be an air traffic controller?

By Roger Raber - Apr. 2, 2023

You need a minimum of an associate's degree to be considered for air traffic control training. The type and level of a college degree can vary as long as they conform with the Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative.

Candidates with an associate's degree in any field must complete their AT-CTI training at one of the 36 vetted training colleges nationwide. It is unnecessary to hold a degree related to air traffic control, but majors such as transportation, business, engineering, and computer studies are helpful.

Those with a bachelor's degree in one of the aforementioned fields are not required to enroll in a degree program approved by the AT-CTI. They will receive their training at the FAA training academy in Oklahoma City when accepted.

Enrolling in one of the AT-CTI-approved college programs is considered the best plan for working in the air control industry for those without formal educational training.

Graduates from one of these programs are typically fully certified as air traffic controllers in two to five years, whereas it may take someone with a different training experience five to eight years for full certification.
