What degree do you need to be an equine therapist?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You need a bachelor's degree in animal science to be an equine therapist. This is the minimum requirement, and many employers in the field prefer candidates with a master's degree in animal science.

Counseling-related degrees can also be acceptable in becoming an equine therapist. If you are getting a bachelor's or a master's in animal science, you should also try to take any counseling-related courses.

Other course topics may include therapeutic riding instruction, equine studies, Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH), International standards and contraindications, companion animals, evaluation of horses, and general horsemanship.

In addition to course-specific work, you should also seek to participate in seminars and work to gain hands-on experience with horses. If you can intern at a horse-related facility during or immediately after college, it would be highly beneficial to your career in the field.

Certain colleges also offer graduate certificate programs for students who have a graduate degree in animal science.
