What degree do you need to be an optometrist?
You need a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree to be an optometrist. Ideally, you will have an undergraduate degree in pre-med or biological sciences. For some schools, you may only need three years of post-secondary education with courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and math.
Before you can apply to an optometry program, you will need to pass the Optometry Admission Test (OAT). This exam tests applicants in science and reading comprehension as well as physics and quantitative reasoning. Your OAT scores will need to be submitted along with your school application.
Once accepted into a program, you can pursue your Doctor of Optometry degree. Your coursework will include anatomy and physiology, optics, and visual science. You will also learn about the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and disorders. After you have obtained your OD, you will have to pass the board exam.
The National Board of Examiners in Optometry test is required before you can practice as an optometrist. Some states will require that you pass additional exams before you are able to practice. After passing the board exam, you will be able to obtain a license in the state where you intend to practice.
