What do entry-level civil engineers do?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

Entry-level civil engineers work closely with their team leads, take ownership over parts of a project, and submit permit applications. Most civil engineers have completed at least a bachelor's degree program as well as some internships prior to beginning work in their field. The skills and knowledge base required for this job are highly specific, and employers will expect an entry-level civil engineer to have a strong understanding of the job prior to hiring.

Entry-level civil engineers work under the direction of a team lead who is typically a senior civil engineer. The senior engineer assigns portions of an overall project to the entry-level engineer. From there, entry-level civil engineers complete tasks and report the status of their portions of a project to the senior civil engineer.

A large part of an entry-level civil engineers job includes completing some menial tasks, like filling out and submitting permit applications to make life easier for the more senior engineers. Over time, entry-level civil engineers begin to take ownership over larger parts of their company's projects.
