This question is about what a dermatologist does.

What does a typical day look like for a dermatologist?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

A typical day for a dermatologist involves patient care, diagnosis, and treatment. The average workday of a dermatologist is about eight to ten hours and can mean seeing up to 50 patients per day.

On a typical day, a clinical dermatologist will get to the office about 1 hour before patients arrive and attend didactics. Dermatologists will see patients basically non-stop from about 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. They will diagnose, treat, and provide prevention information for skin diseases.

They may see minor skin rashes, skin cancers, or even select sexually transmitted diseases. In between patient visits, dermatologists spend much of their day making patient calls and doing follow-ups. They often have a long list of refill requests that require precise attention before refilling.

They also spend time on lab reports and personally call patients who need advice after a previous visit.

Academic dermatologists also spend a large amount of time reading the latest research and even attending conferences or seminars on a particular skin problem or condition. By keeping up with advancements in treatment, they are able to provide better treatment options for their patients.
