What does base pay mean?

Base pay means the amount in the initial offering of salary or another form of compensation, such as hourly wages, to an employee from an employer that does not include any employee benefits, bonuses, potential raises, or forms of additional compensation.

Base compensation can also be referred to as a base salary, base wage, or base pay. An employee's base compensation may be given in a number of different ways, including:

  • As an hourly rate of pay

  • Weekly paycheck

  • Monthly paycheck

  • Annual salary

Base compensation does also not include any of the following items:

  • Overtime pay

  • Employee benefits, including insurance plans

  • Retirement plans, such as 401 Ks

  • Incentive-based pay
