What education do you need to be a technical analyst?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

The educational requirements for a technical analyst are typically a minimum of a bachelor's degree. A bachelor's degree is the primary educational pathway because most technical analyst roles require a degree in information technology, computer science, business administration, or other related programs.

A bachelor's degree in an IT field can help prepare potential technical analysts for their careers. A computer science degree program usually includes coursework in computer programming, database management, and computer architecture. Programs for technical analysts are heavily based in science and math.

While pursuing a bachelor's degree, be sure to take additional courses or join online training programs in computer programming. Computer programming courses in Java, C++, C#, and SQL are beneficial to technical analysts. Employers typically look for candidates with a strong knowledge base in computer programming languages.

In addition to the educational requirements needed to become a technical analyst, there is also a licensing requirement for most technical analysts roles. The main body tasked with issuing licenses to market technicians is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).

For a technician to receive the FINRA license, they must be sponsored by the firm that employs them. Apart from FINRA, technical analysts may also receive market certification from other professional bodies such as the CFA Institute.
