What education is needed to become an ICU nurse?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 10, 2021

To become an ICU nurse, you must first hold a degree from an accredited nursing institution. This can be either an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree. Bachelor's degrees tend to be more attractive to employers, but associate's degrees tend to be less of a financial burden on the student.

The time commitment for each of these educational options varies, but neither of them means much without passing the NCLEX once completed. This examination is what certifies a person as a registered nurse, and you can't become an ICU nurse without this status.

Needless to say, experience earned after completing a degree is just as important as the degree itself.
