What is a CCA certification?
A certified coding associate (CCA) is a certification in medical coding that proves that an individual has skills in areas like reviewing medical records, applying diagnostic codes, and maintaining medical records. The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) administers the CCA certification.
To become a CCA, you are required to have graduated high school. Typically, it is required that you have some medical coding experience, but not always. There are certification programs that can range from 10 weeks to several semesters. They often include clinical experience as part of the certification process.
During the process, you learn about the coding system used in medical settings and how to apply them to process claims with insurance. You will also gain basic knowledge in pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical science and terminology.
To become a CCA, you must pass an exam administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The exam has 100 multiple-choice questions. It tests your knowledge of clinical classifications, reimbursement methods, and several other collaborative areas related to medical coding.
To maintain your CCA certification, you must complete 20 continuing education credits every two years.
