This question is about what a cdl class a driver does and cdl class a driver.
A Class A CDL Driver is a driver who has earned a Class A license that allows them to operate larger vehicles. In most states, this license allows the driver to operate any vehicle with a semi-trailer or trailer with two or more axles.
This license also includes any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) greater than 26,000 pounds. A Class A CDL is required for any drivers that are towing trailers with more than 10,000 pounds of GVWR.
Depending on the state, additional endorsements may be required. Drivers may be able to operate tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, double and triple trailers, tractor-trailer buses, tanker vehicles, livestock carriers, and flatbeds.
This type of CDL is considered the topmost tier for commercial drivers and requires additional training compared with Class B and C licensing. To receive this license, a person needs to apply for a permit, complete a specialized training program, and pass a written and driving exam.
