What is a CMP certification?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

A certified meeting professional (CMP) certification is a certification in meeting management that proves that an individual has skills in logistics, communication, and problem-solving. The CMP certification is administered by the Meeting Professionals International and the Events Industry Council.

To become a CMP, you must pass the CMP exam. However, before you can even attempt the exam, you must have both experience and education. The experience can come in three different methods. 3 years of full-time work in the industry within the past five years, 2 years of experience and a relevant degree, or 3 years as an instructor for the field.

Next is education. You also have options here. One is 25 hours of relevant educational activities completed within the past five years or having held an industry internship with a minimum of 200 hours of work through a professional and accredited organization. Either one of these takes time and effort to complete.

Finally, if you are approved to take the exam, you will take a written exam that covers the functions of meeting management. The application for the test is $275, while the test itself is $450. You should study and be well-prepared to answer nearly 200 questions regarding the industry.

Having a CMP certification allows you to present yourself as a professional who is skilled in your trade. Some larger companies such as hotels require you to have a CMP to work for and plan their events. The certification also provides on average $10,000 more a year than the planner without a certification.
