What is a co-op internship?
A co-op internship is an internship that is extended over multiple terms. While a traditional internship lasts one term (usually over the summer), a co-op differs in that a student will return to the same employer over two to three separate terms to perform internship work.
Co-ops are typically paid positions and last anywhere from three to 12 months. Universities with required co-op programs usually expect students to complete two practical learning experiences.
During co-ops, students are out of class and working for at least a full school year throughout their college career. University programs that require co-ops usually take five years to complete.
Alternatively, normal internship programs can offer more flexibility for students. Internships can be paid or unpaid, shorter in length, and completed in the summer when students are out of school. Students who choose to do internships during the school year usually work part-time to still take classes.
Co-ops tend to be most common in engineering and technology, but options exist in business, liberal arts, and other career fields. A student needs to research their university requirements, program requirements, and industry requirements before applying for a co-op.
