What is a functional manager?

A functional manager is a person who has management authority over an organizational unit within a business, company, or other organization. They oversee a functional area of an organization, such as a department or a team.

To become a functional manager, you should hold a bachelor's degree in a related field, although most companies prefer their functional managers to hold at least a master's degree. Functional managers also need to gain experience before going into this management position.
