What is a learning organization?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

A learning organization refers to a business, company, or association that commits to improving its actions based on the progress it gains in knowledge and understanding concerning certain issues. Learning organizations are not considered conservative in that they are willing to change when they are confronted by new insights and knowledge.

The defining characteristic of most learning organizations is that new ideas and concepts are paramount if learning is to happen within an organization. Learning organizations rely heavily on knowledge in these ways:

  • They seek to create knowledge

  • They seek to capture or ingest knowledge

  • They seek to transfer knowledge within their organizations and sometimes to external sources

  • They seek to mobilize knowledge by making changes according to it

Learning organizations' reliance on knowledge makes them resilient and adaptable. They can adapt easier to changing environments, such as a specific market, more so than organizations that don't put a primary focus on new knowledge. The goal of most learning organizations is to be in an almost constant state of positive change and development.
