What is a portfolio company?

A portfolio company is an organization in which a buyout firm, venture capital firm, or holding company has equity. Private equity firms hold an interest in portfolio companies as part of their company portfolio.

When a firm invests in a portfolio company, the firm's objective is to increase its value and see a return on investment through the selling of a portfolio company.
