What is a STEM teacher?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

A STEM teacher is a professional educator that teaches subjects in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Teachers who can teach STEM-related subjects are very high in demand.

Generally, STEM teachers specialize in one particular subject of STEM, like chemistry, biology, industrial engineering, or computer science. This is especially true of STEM teachers who teach at the secondary and post-secondary levels.

Primary school teachers sometimes teach general STEM lessons. This is meant to gain the interest of young minds in the STEM fields.

STEM teachers aim to get students excited and interested in STEM fields by covering various types of curriculum and doing projects that are participatory at an individual or group level.

STEM teacher responsibilities include:

  • Curriculum design

  • Lesson implementation

  • Student evaluation

  • Collaboration with other STEM teachers.

STEM teachers also must participate in professional development and continuing education to ensure they remain current in their field of STEM, as these fields are continually evolving.
