What is a swing shift?

A swing shift is a work shift that goes from mid-afternoon to midnight. The shift is between a "regular" 9-to-5 and a night shift. It's not quite a day shift, nor quite a night shift, so it is called a swing shift.

Typically, a swing shift worker swings between working a day shift and a night shift as they work with some workers who work days and others who work nights. Most factories, or any place that requires workers to be working 24/7, have swing shifts to cover all the times they need workers.
