This question is about what a fashion designer does.
A typical day for a fashion designer can range from cutting patterns to interviewing and fitting potential clients. The daily routine will vary depending on the designer's experience and position within the fashion industry.
Some designers new to the fashion workplace will go to work for a large designer. Entry-level positions with larger design houses or clothing manufacturers often include less glamorous tasks such as cutting patterns, working as an assistant designer, and making a specialized clothing component.
While important to the overall design vision, these roles do not allow a new designer to have creative control over a collection or clothing line.
More experienced designers working may find themselves sketching and sewing new designs daily. They are sometimes given a brief and asked to design clothing that addresses the parameters given and will typically meet with other designers and management providing updates on the progress of their designs.
Finally, self-employed designers can express their creativity through their design work. Their day will consist of all aspects of running a business. Phone calls and emails to current clients are necessary to set fitting appointments while contacting potential clients is required to ensure profitability.
Designers who own their shops must also deal with employees, insurance, and advertising. The tradeoff for all of this responsibility is the creative freedom to create clothing collections that represent their point of view.
