What is an MD Ph.D.?
An MD Ph.D. is a Medical Doctor (MD) that holds a Ph.D. Many MD Ph.D. holders work in academic medical centers, such as medical schools or teaching hospitals.
These professionals also conduct research in institutes such as the National Institutes of Health or other government or private agencies or work for pharmaceutical or biotech companies.
Trainees in this field act as research scientists who solve mechanisms underlying disease, combined with their interest in treating patients in a clinical setting.
While those with MD Ph.D. and MD degrees are both considered medical doctors, MD Ph.D. graduates also have a Ph.D., meaning they are therefore known as physician-scientists or medical scientists.
Obtaining this extra degree requires a different program structure and length compared to MD programs.
