What is an MVR check?
An MVR check refers to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check in which information on an individual's driving record is pulled from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This practice is commonly used by employers in the transportation industry to help screen job candidates in terms of qualifications and eligibility for certain driving roles.
An MVR check is part of the background check process that companies in the transportation industry perform. Though, it is not strictly relegated to the transportation industry and may be utilized by any company in an industry that requires them to hire driving employees.
MVR checks can show if a candidate has a reliable driving record and maintains safety compliance while driving their vehicle. This information is gleaned from the report from several different items contained within it. The information on each MVR check report can vary depending on the state, role, and industry. However, here is common info found on MVR checks:
Driver's License Information, this includes the driver's name, driver's license number, date of birth, driver's state, height, etc.
Documented driving violations committed by the driver
License Status, whether it is Active, Suspended, or Revoked
Moving Violations and any convictions for driving infractions

FMCSA requires that all employers request a pre-employment MVR check in any state where the potential driver held a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) within the past three years. FMCSA also requires employers to conduct MVR checks on a yearly basis as part of the employer's annual review process to see if a current driver still meets the requirements.
