What is an NRP certification?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

An NRP certification is a Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification in the medical field that proves an individual has skills in caring for pregnant women, caring for newborns at the time of delivery, and resuscitation techniques.

The NRP certification is offered by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This program is designed to provide candidates with the most up-to-date methods for the resuscitation of newborns.

To obtain the NRP certification, you must go through a multi-step process that includes:

  • Attending lectures on relevant topics

  • Self-study sessions

  • Written examinations

  • Skills examinations

You must pass all written and skills exams to be awarded the NRP certification. And you must complete the course within 30 days. At the completion of the course, applicants are expected to know a wide variety of categories involved in neonatal resuscitation, including:

  • Resuscitation steps

  • Chest compressions

  • Intubation

  • Medication administration during resuscitation

  • Preterm neonatal care

  • End-of-life care for the neonatal patient

Many healthcare organizations require the NRP certification for their medical professionals. It can also be beneficial for those wanting to further their careers in neonatal care and those seeking leadership roles in the field.

NRP certification lasts two years. After your NRP certification has expired, you must complete a shorter recertification program and pass an additional exam. Renewal classes are important because those looking to recertify can find out about any changes the AAP has made to the resuscitation guidelines.
