What is an RMA certification?
A Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification for a medical assistant proves an individual has skills in medical assistant knowledge, tasks, and ethics. This certification is administered by the American Medical Technologists (AMTs).
The RMA certification is gained through on-the-job experience or military medic training.
Those eligible for the RMA certification include:
Graduates of accredited medical assistant programs
Medical assistants that possess military training
Medical assistants that possess at least three years of professional experience
Instructors of medical assistant programs and courses
RMA certificate holders can join AMT's network of medical professionals. Those who gain this certification must renew it every three years.
The AMT provides candidates with practice exams and reference materials.
A similar certification to the RMA is the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification offered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). This certification has been around longer than the RMA certification (by close to 10 years) and only needs to be renewed every five years.
While the CMA certification has been around longer and is likely a bit more recognizable to potential medical employers, the RMA certification is still a solid option for medical assistants.
