What is base compensation?

Base compensation is the initial offering of salary to an employee from an employer that does not include employee benefits, bonuses, potential raises, or forms of additional compensation.

Base compensation can also be referred to as a base salary, base wage, or base pay. An employee's base compensation may be given in several different ways, including:

  • As an hourly rate of pay

  • Weekly paycheck

  • Monthly paycheck

  • Annual salary

Base compensation does also not include any of the following items:

  • Overtime pay

  • Employee benefits, including insurance plans

  • Retirement plans, such as 401 Ks

  • Incentive-based pay

  • Potential raises

  • Bonuses

  • Additional forms of compensation

  • Commission
