What is computer aided manufacturing?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is the use of software to control machine tools in manufacturing workspaces. It can sometimes be referred to as computer-aided modeling or computer-aided machining. CAM is used to automate parts of a manufacturing process.

There are three required components for the CAM system to function. First, you must have the machinery that turns your raw materials into a product. Then, you must have software that generates toolpaths to tell the machine how to do this.

Finally, you need to connect the two by ensuring that the program is in a language the machine can understand.

While CAM is a tool that helps you to automate part of the manufacturing process, many humans are working to pull this all together. You have people still overseeing the machines, creating these programs, and doing little parts that require a human touch.
