What is discrete manufacturing?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

Discrete manufacturing is the manufacturing of finished specific items that are easily counted, recorded, touched, or seen. Discrete manufacturing involves systems and parts, such as nuts, bolts, brackets, wires, individual products, and assemblies.

Here are some product examples that come from discrete manufacturing:

  • Cars

  • Airplanes

  • Toys

  • Defense systems

  • Smart phones

  • Other electronics

In many cases, a discrete product made from discrete manufacturing can be broken down into its parts at the end of its life cycle in order to recycle the parts.

Discrete manufacturing is far different than process manufacturing, which requires the use of formulas or recipes and the refinement of raw materials. In process manufacturing, the final product can not be broken down and recycled at the end of its life cycle.
