What is Federal Work-Study?

By Justin Parker - Apr. 25, 2023

Federal Work-Study (FWS) refers to a specific type of financial aid that is offered by the United States government to undergraduate and graduate students that are in financial need and meet other particular qualifications. The Federal Work-Study Award is overseen and given out by the United States Department of Education.

Students that are awarded the Federal Work-Study monies have the ability to work both off campus and on campus for a variety of eligible employers, including:

  • Government agencies

  • Private businesses and companies

  • Nonprofit organizations

In addition, Federal Work-Study jobs can be related to the student's major field of study, but can also be community service based. The amount of funds awarded to each student depends on each specific student's financial need, and also the availability of funds at their particular university or college.

In general, students are paid at least the minimum wage for whatever job they obtain. They also might work up to a specific amount of hours per week during their school's academic year.

FWS funds are limited to a degree, so the funds are handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must meet qualifications and complete the free application to be considered.
