What is hot work?
Hot work refers to any work that involves spark or flame production.Occupations ranging from welding to some types of roof applications are considered hot work and require certain types of precautions.
Various processes are categorized as hot work. All of these involve the creation of a spark or flame that may be dangerous in specific environments. Welding, grinding, drilling, torch-applied roofing, soldering, and brazing all fall into the category of hot work.
Those working in building or service trades that involve hot work are required to observe unique rules and precautions. Hot work requires a permit. The length of a hot work permit is limited to 30 days allowing contractors time to complete hot work tasks. In addition to requiring a permit, tradesmen must observe the 35-foot rule that states all work must be conducted at least 35 feet from tanks and containers that may have held combustible materials.
Additional safety precautions involved when conducting hot work involve emergency safety equipment. A minimum of two AFFF extinguishers, one CO2 fire extinguisher, and a fire blanket must be on the hot work site. Employers risk fines and work shutdowns if both permit and OSHA standards are not met.
