What is patient engagement?

Patient engagement is the desire and capability of patients to participate in their care. For this to be done, these steps given to the patients must be appropriate for the individual and be in cooperation with the healthcare provider. The purpose of patient engagement is to maximize outcomes and improve the experiences of care.

An example of patient engagement is when a doctor recommends a patient begins exercising regularly to increase heart health. They may provide options of exercises that are accessible for the patient and their lifestyle. When the patient does complete exercises, they are performing the patient engagement.

Patient engagement often leads to more successful outcomes because the patient becomes a full participant in their health. They can take ownership of that care and that provides them with more desire to continually improve and maximize potential outcomes.
