QPR training, or Question, Persuade, and Refer training, is training for professionals or volunteers involved in suicide prevention. The training helps these individuals to properly communicate with people who might be at risk for committing suicide.
QPR training is available through the QPR institute which has the mission of saving lives and reducing suicidal behaviors via the application of practical, innovative, and proven suicide prevention training. QPR can be learned through the QPR Institute's Gatekeeper program. Those who complete the training are referred to as Gatekeepers.
While gatekeepers can be professionals, they can also be volunteers or any of the following:
Friends
Neighbors
Parents
Teachers
Ministers
Office supervisors
These are just a few examples, but gatekeepers can be anyone that is in the position to recognize if another person is in danger of committing suicide and can help them divert from this action.
QPR training sees gatekeepers learning to:
Identify the warning signs of potential suicide victims
Understand how to communicate with those contemplating suicide by offering them hopeful alternatives
Know to request the right help in certain situations involving suicide and save a life
