What is smart manufacturing?
Smart manufacturing is an umbrella term used for coordinating processes involved in production to become more efficient in the manufacturing process. The processes are unique to the products being manufactured but the benefits of using these processes are universally acknowledged.
Because smart manufacturing relies on the increased use of robotics, certain industries are more able to apply its principles. Both the semiconductor industry and the auto industry have built state-of-the-art facilities where robots handle production. Infineon, Volkswagen, and Tesla are examples of manufacturers using robots to take advantage of the benefits of smart manufacturing.
The single most important benefit, across industry types, is improved efficiency. Not only do these automated manufacturing facilities reduce downtime related to human error and increase productivity, but they are also able to gather and assess real-time data. This data often shows where improvements in material acquisition and sourcing, distribution, and facilities organization can be implemented.
While not all industry types will be able to employ smart manufacturing to the extent of VW, GE, or Honeywell, the principles of real-time data collection and increased efficiency make it an attractive option for manufacturers moving forward.
