What is tactical planning?

By Roger Raber - Jun. 12, 2023

Tactical planning is planning comprising a series of actions necessary to achieve a goal. This type of planning is considered mid-level and is essential to the overall success of any larger operation.

Unlike strategic planning, which is concerned with long-term and broad business goals, tactical planning focuses on short-term steps and actions that aid in achieving those long-term goals. Some of the characteristics of tactical planning have a limited scope, can be executed, and are measurable.

An example of tactical planning can be seen in a company whose strategic plan involves developing a repeatable and consistent candidate evaluation for hiring. The tactical planning necessary to achieve this new candidate evaluation system involves multiple tasks.

Arriving at the most important candidate qualities and assembling a list of appropriate interview questions represent measurable tasks that can be executed. When these tasks are completed, the company will be much closer to its strategic goal of revising its hiring process.
