What is the career path for a neurologist?
The career path for a neurologist begins with the completion of a four-year medical degree, and then a three-year residency. After completion, neurologists need to complete a fellowship to have specific training in a sub-field of neurology. Fellowships tend to last a year or so.
There are different subfields for radiology, such as epilepsy, brain injury medicine, autonomic disorders, and behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry. These subfields allow neurologists to be extremely skilled in one specific area of neurology. Some neurologists may not choose to go into a subfield but work in general neurology.
After years of working in neurology, some neurologists may desire to go into teaching. There are a few paths to take for this. Some neurologists teach courses at universities in classroom settings. Other neurologists choose to work at a learning hospital, where they can teach new neurologists and train aspiring neurologists.
Neurologists do not have much career growth specifically as neurologists because once they complete their education, they have generally reached the peak of their career growth. Depending on where they work, they could choose to become the head of the neurology department, which would allow for more management and responsibility.
